I first drew this view of the Prinsengracht Canal on a sunny summer day in Amsterdam, where the canal was lined with boats overflowing with flowers. I was particularly drawn to the variety of Amsterdam's architecture — the different rooflines, windows and proportions of the buildings creating an intricate pattern along the water.
How I Create My Line Drawings
How I Create My Line Drawings
To produce my line drawings, I use sketches or photographs from my travels. Back in my studio, I first produce a pencil outline of the scene, stripping it back to its essential forms while keeping enough detail to capture the character of the place. I then gradually refine my sketch with a focus on the shapes, patterns and details that catch my eye. Finally, I go over the sketch using a fine-line pen to develop the distinct black and white look of the final piece.
This is a digital reproduction of my original pen-and-ink drawing, printed in the UK on 250gsm uncoated paper. As a digital print, it is available as an open edition rather than a limited run.
